Hydrocotyle sp. "Japan" is the popular name for the plant in various botanical forums. It is a variant of Hydrocotyle tripartita from Southeast Asia.

It is characterized by fast, compact growth and small, bushy green leaves on vertical stems. The plant can form a carpet (5-10 cm tall), and compact growth can be encouraged by pressing the carpet by hand when maintaining the aquarium (mechanical block). Carpet formation and tight growth work best in full light.
