Matrix™ is a high porosity biological medium that provides efficient biological filtration to remove nitrogenous waste. Matrix™ is a porous inorganic solid approximately 10 mm in diameter. Each liter of Matrix™ provides as much surface as 170 liters of plastic balls (>~700 m ^{2 )!} Plastic biomaterials provide only external surface area, while Matrix™ provides both external and internal macroporous surface area. These macropores are sized to support nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria. Unlike other forms of biological media, this allows Matrix™ to simultaneously remove nitrates as well as ammonia and nitrite in the same filter.

Matrix™ is completely inert and will not decompose. It doesn't need to be replaced. Since most bacteria are inside, the Matrix™ can be flushed when needed without damaging the filter. Matrix™ is compatible with all types of wet or dry filters.

Instructions:
Use 250 ml of Matrix™ per 200 liters (50 US gallons)** of water. Matrix™ can be placed in any type of filter and is especially effective in canister filters. The Matrix™ is large enough that filter bags are not required for most applications. The Matrix™ works well in a drip tray system, but you may find that the larger Pond Matrix™ is better for this type of application. Use with Stability® to build biofilters faster.
