FiltoSmart 60 uses a coarse 20 ppi filter foam and ceramic media to provide a high surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize. The time to change filter media varies depending on the size of the aquarium, the number of fish and plants, and the decline in filter performance. It is best to only replace the ceramic filter media when you fully restart the tank so as not to interfere with the beneficial bioburden.
